Neuropathy Q&A

What’s neuropathy?

Neuropathy is pain that results from nerve damage. One function of the nerves in your arms, hands, fingers, legs, toes, face, and organs is to carry information about physical sensation back to your brain. This helps you feel the softness of a baby blanket, the coldness of snow, and the painful touch of a hot stove. Neuropathy occurs when these nerves suffer damage and begin to malfunction. This causes abnormal reactions in your central nervous system, sometimes causing you to experience pain without any identifiable cause.

One of the most common causes of neuropathy is a degenerative disease in the lumbar and/or cervical spine. Complications from diabetes also cause another common form of neuropathy. Injuries suffered in auto accidents or falls, thyroid disorders, kidney disorders, chronic inflammation, various infections, and certain vitamin deficiencies can also lead to neuropathy.

What are the symptoms?

The type and severity of symptoms individuals experience with neuropathy vary but may include:

  • Tingling in the hands and feet
  • Sharp, stabbing pains in the lower and/or upper extremities
  • Numbness of the hands and feet
  • Electrical or buzzing sensation/pain in the hands and feet
  • Weakness in the arms and legs
  • Burning cold sensation in the feet
  • Excessive sweating
  • Sexual dysfunction, typically in men

How’s neuropathy treated?

There are successful medical treatments available to relieve the pain associated with neuropathy. The specialists at Solas Health use many advanced treatment methods to relieve pain caused by neuropathy. The first step in successful treatment is identifying the cause of nerve damage through a thorough examination and review of your health history.
Depending on the cause of your neuropathy, the providers at Solas Health may recommend:
