Sciatica Q&A

What is sciatica?

The sciatic nerve originates in the lumbosacral spine and travels through the buttock and down the back of each leg. Irritation of the sciatic nerve can cause sciatica or pain that radiates from the low back into the hip and lower extremities. It rarely occurs in both legs at the same time. It’s more common in middle age, often developing in the mid to late 40s. Symptoms typically develop gradually over time and sometimes lasts for moments to hours, but the pain can become chronic and quite debilitating.
Symptoms may include:

What are the symptoms?

The type and severity of symptoms individuals experience with neuropathy vary but may include:

  • Worsening pain with sitting
  • Constant pain in the buttock or leg
  • Burning or tingling pain rather than aching pain
  • Sharp pain associated with difficulty walking or standing
  • Weakness or numbness in the leg, foot, and toes

What causes sciatica?

Numerous conditions can lead to sciatic nerve pain, including:

  • Nerve root compression caused by lumbar disc herniation
  • Degenerative joint disease of other abnormalities in the sacroiliac joint
  • Piriformis syndrome with spasms in the piriformis muscle, located in the buttocks, causing irritation of the sciatic nerve
  • Facet joint issues
  • Hip arthrosis or destruction of the cartilage in the hip joint
  • Neuropathic conditions

How do you treat sciatica?

The physicians at Solas Health treat sciatica by first determining the source of the nerve irritation and pain. After a thorough evaluation that provides a diagnosis for your sciatic nerve pain, there are various treatment modalities available to relieve your symptoms.

If your pain is caused by piriformis syndrome, for example, you may respond well to massage therapy, heat-cold application, or acupuncture. Persistent pain may require a corticosteroid injection to relieve inflammation and irritation of the nerve. Treatment options otherwise include standard pain management strategies for lumbar disc herniation, degenerative arthritis in the sacroiliac joint, and other identified causes of sciatic nerve pain.
